Leading developer, Barratt and David Wilson Homes have joined forces with wildlife charity, Butterfly Conservation, to participate in the annual Butterfly Count (19th July– 11th August) at its Aylesbury development, Kingsbrook.
The Big Butterfly Count is an annual nationwide survey where participants are encouraged to spend 15 minutes looking for and recording 17 species of common butterfly and two day-flying moths, during three weeks of high summer.
The Count has the backing of Sir David Attenborough and Chris Packham and has rapidly become the world’s biggest butterfly survey, with over 100,000 people taking part in the UK last year and over one million butterflies counted in total.
This year, the leading homebuilder is encouraging the residents at Kingsbrook, a flagship development that features an abundance of wildlife friendly areas, to take part.
Kingsbrook, which is located on Burcott Lane, has been designed in partnership with the RSPB to create a nature friendly area that can become a benchmark for future developments.
The new community consists of three villages, each with their own distinct identityand will include new parks, sports facilities, allotments, a new community centre and schools.
Glenn Copper, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Thames, said:
“As a leading developer, we aim to protect the nearby nature where we build and are delighted to have pursued this by collaborating with Butterfly Conservation on the Big Butterfly Count. Our Kingsbrook development is an insight into the wildlife friendly places we hope to contribute to and invest in in the future, for the sakes of our residents and the nature surrounding our operating areas.”
Katie Callaghan, Spokesperson for the Butterfly Conservation, said:
“Our research shows that 76% of the UK’s butterflies and two-thirds of our larger moths are in decline, but surveys like the Big Butterfly Count really help us to see which species are struggling and where we should focus our future conservation efforts. It’s fantastic to have Barratt and David Wilson Homes encouraging their residents to help. You can do as many 15-minute counts as you like over the three weeks and people can submit their results through the free phone app or online at our website.”
