Heathcote pupils learn about hedgehogs with habitat donation from David Wilson Homes

David Wilson Homes has celebrated Hedgehog Awareness Week (30th April-6th May) by donating two hedgehog homes to a local primary school in Heathcote next to its Poets Meadow development.

Heathcote Primary School has welcomed the donation of the Hogilos as part of the awareness week as its ‘Heathcote Hedghogs’ class is currently learning about the little critters and will be able to find out more about them with their new hedgehog homes.

The Hogilos will be put in the play area of the school and keep the little creatures safe from any prickly situations. The habitats are recommended by experts to provide a sturdy and waterproof home for hedgehogs seeking shelter.

The homebuilder has joined forces with the RSPB to set a new benchmark in wildlife friendly developments and is applying the charity’s advice to its own developments as well as encouraging others to do the same.

Mrs Lara Jeffries, Headteacher at Heathcote Primary School, said: Hedgehog Awareness Week

“I have been inspired by Year 6 girls I previously taught, who tirelessly taught others how to care for hedgehogs and their environments. One of our focuses at Heathcote is the environment and the wildlife within it; being part of an ever growing development means this is all the more important. We look forward to welcoming hedgehogs at Heathcote! Thank you David Wilson Homes for sharing our passion to look after our animals.”

It is estimated that there are fewer than a million hedgehogs remaining in Britain, with a third of the population having been lost since the millennium. Hedgehog Awareness Week aims to highlight the problems hedgehogs face and how they can be helped in UK gardens.

Nationally and locally, David Wilson Homes has a long term pledge to create more wildlife friendly developments, by working with the RSPB and giving nature a new home.

Jason Hearn, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said:

“Our partnership with the RSPB is extremely important to us and we want to work closely with our customers to ensure our British wildlife is preserved at our developments. Something as little as a hedgehog habitat can make the world of difference and we were delighted to be able to donate two Hogilos to Heathcote Primary School.”

Poets Meadow, located on Harbury Lane, is a collection of three, four and five bedroom homes nestled between Warwick and Leamington Spa.
