Are current gas safety checks in the UK good enough?

Landlord Licence Scheme

The UK has around five million privately rented properties under the Landlord Licence Scheme. Unfortunately, according to some people, this has led to gas safety becoming a ‘postcode lottery’, despite the government having set requirements.

It’s not just property owners who are in the firing line, either. More than 20% of small business energy users aren’t aware that failing to have a yearly gas safety check can invalidate their insurance.

Gas safety monitoring requires expertise. Fuel leaks, fires and even explosions, as well as carbon monoxide poisoning can occur because of poorly fitted and maintained gas appliances. As a result, landlords who fail to comply with gas safety regulations can face tens of thousands of pounds in fines.

Lizzie says:

“When I found out that my offer was accepted, and I was finally going to be a homeowner I felt elated!  It’s hard to find somewhere affordable, especially in Hertfordshire so it all felt too good to be true!

How to protect your home when renovating

Renovation is becoming more popular than ever. People are moving house half as many times in their lives and twice as many Brits are now planning to extend their home rather than move house. Renovation, big or small, normally means making structural changes to your home, so it’s important to think carefully about how to protect your home when work is underway. A recent report reveals that the most popular insurance claim for home renovations and extensions is theft of building materials, closely followed by escape of water.

Matt Poll, CEO at Neos, the UK’s first smart home insurance provider, shares his top tips for making your renovation plans are a success.
