If you’re looking forward to spending your first winter in your new home, you’ll want to make sure your décor is cosy and inviting. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing four simple but effective winter styling tips that will add warmth and comfort to your home, while still looking perfectly modern and on-trend.
Add statement velvet furnishings
If you haven’t already gotten on board with the velvet interiors trend, then now is the perfect time to do so. A leading trend throughout 2018, it looks set to stick around for yet another season. Not only is this luxurious fabric very sophisticated, but it’s also sumptuously soft, so it makes the ideal cosy covering for a sofa or armchair.
Muted greys and deep navy shades continue to be popular colour choices for velvet sofas, but lately we’re also seeing a lot of bright festive jewel tones, like ruby and emerald. If you’re not sure you want to go all in with such a vibrantly coloured couch, go for a velvet footstool or ottoman in a statement shade, instead.
Add cosy textured accessories
Texture is key to creating an inviting and cosy space. Rugs with shaggy finishes will add a lovely soft underfoot feeling to your living area — Berber rugs with Moroccan-inspired geometric patterns are a popular trend at the moment, but real hides are also a good option if you’re looking for something a little more rustic.
Throw cushions are also a great way to add extra texture to your seating area. When choosing cushions, go for a variety of different shapes in complementary colours and prints, and don’t forget to mix up the textures to create visual contrast.
Set the mood with soft lighting
While cosy soft furnishings are great for snuggling into, you’ll also want to have some atmospheric lighting in your living space. If possible, look for lamps with a dimmer switch or adjustable setting, so you can control the level of lighting.
In terms of lampshades, copper is very on-trend at the moment, and the reflective metallic finish will look wonderfully atmospheric and warm when lit. Finally, don’t forget to add plenty of candles, lanterns, and tea lights — bonus points if you pick ones with a wintry scent.
New homes can sometimes feel a little bland and impersonal, but with my winter styling tips, you can create a cosy and inviting interior that you’ll simply love relaxing in throughout the season.
